(SAN ANTONIO, October 25, 2023)—The Nationwide Science Basis (NSF) has awarded a 5-year, $3.6 million grant to two professors at The College of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) to acquire a superior way to converse engineering acumen to varied engineering classes.
Joel Alejandro Mejia and M. Sidury Christiansen are collaborating on an ethnographic job, “Rhetorical Engineering Instruction to Help Proactive Fairness Teaching and Results (RESPETO).” The challenge will consist of a handbook of proposed pedagogical techniques to deal with exclusionary language and linguistic methods in engineering classes.

Christiansen and Mejia will look at how race influences language use and how race-connected language produces barriers for minority students pursuing engineering degrees. They also system to educate engineering college students and faculty on the use of biased race-similar language that is pervasive in the subject of engineering and guidebook them on approaches for transforming it.
“Whether it can be reworking perceptions of engineering, fostering important awareness of language in STEM, or inspiring shifts in linguistic and instructional techniques, each tiny phase forward brings us closer to dismantling systemic racism entrenched in the language we use,” Christiansen claimed. “This project is about creating a variation that reverberates much beyond our educational circles and into the life of those people who are finding out or considering about researching STEM professions.”
